Electricity distribution
I bought a home — how do I transfer the electricity connection into my own name?

In connection with a property transaction, the electricity connection can usually be transferred to the new owner by providing Vaasan Sähköverkko with a copy of the deed of sale that mentions the transfer of the electricity connection.

Read more about the policy here.

Which electricity distribution product is best for me?

Vaasan Sähköverkko has three electricity distribution products to choose from: General electricity, Night-rate electricity, and Season-rate electricity. To get the best value, choose a distribution product that suits your electricity use.

Check out Vaasan Sähköverkko’s electricity transmission products.

How can I change the metering method for my electricity consumption?

You should change distribution products if there is a clear change in your electricity consumption habits and your current contract is no longer the cheapest for you. This can happen, for instance, if your electricity consumption decreases or most of your consumption shifts to another time of day or year.

As a customer of Vaasan Sähköverkko, you can change your electricity distribution product once a year free of charge. Order the change through our website.

I’m about to buy solar panels — how can I have them connected to the electricity network?

The first thing to check is whether your solar panel system can be connected to the electricity network.

Vaasan Sähköverkko’s guidelines can be found here.

Your own electricity generation
What needs to be taken into account when installing generation equipment?

The construction of the actual power plant and the electrical work after the connection point are the responsibility of the customer. However, installation can only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Your electrical contractor is responsible for ensuring that the equipment complies with regulations and that the installation is carried out in an electrically safe manner. The electrical contractor will also carry out a commissioning inspection of the equipment.

The production installation must not be connected to the network before permission has been obtained from a representative of the distribution company.

Can I sell the surplus energy I produce?

Before commissioning, the electricity meter at the connection point is programmed to meter energy in two directions. As a network company, we don’t buy electricity from you, but you can sell the surplus electricity you generate to an electricity supplier of your choice. In this case, you sign an electricity sales contract with the supplier. However, you can feed the surplus energy into our network.

What should be taken into account when commissioning a production plant?

The starting point is to ensure the safety of the network and the plant in all situations. Before commissioning, the electrical contractor carries out the necessary type tests on the equipment in accordance with the standards and requirements mentioned on this page. The electrical contractor makes a micro-generation notification to the distribution company, and once all of the connection requirements have been checked and are in order, the distribution company notifies electronically when the equipment may be switched on.

Do I have to pay taxes on the electricity I generate?

Producers of less than 100 kVA are exempt from the electricity tax.

Producers of more than 100 kVA with an annual production of 800,000 kWh or less are also exempt from the electricity tax. However, they must register in OmaVero and file a tax return once a year.

Producers of more than 100 kVA with an annual production exceeding 800,000 kWh are liable to pay the electricity tax. This means being required to register as a taxable entity and to submit an electricity tax return and pay electricity tax every month, also on electricity generated for their own use. The power plant’s internal consumption is exempt from electricity tax.

Do I pay a transmission fee for energy fed into the network?

For micro-generation, we do not change a transmission fee for energy fed into the network.

Billing and payments
What payment methods do you offer?

We recommend e-invoicing to all our customers.

We deliver bills electronically as e-invoices and email bills to the Kivra and OmaPosti services. Your e-invoice will arrive in your online bank, whereas Kivra and OmaPosti are electronic mailboxes where you can also easily pay your bill. Email bills are sent through email.

For corporate customers, we recommend e-invoicing

However, if you prefer not to use e-invoicing, we can send you a paper bill by mail or you can make a direct debit agreement with your bank.

With direct debit, you can pay your bills without online banking. If you choose direct debit, we will send the invoicing details by mail well before the due date, and simultaneously send the payment details directly to your bank. With a direct debit contract, you authorize the bank to pay the bill on your behalf. The bank will pay your bill automatically from your account on the due date.

Please note that it is not possible to pay your bill on site at our customer service.

How do I change the due date for billing?

You can easily postpone the due date of your bills in our Online service. If the due date can be changed, this is shown automatically next to the unpaid bill.

You can change the due date of a bill if you do so before the due date, you have no other outstanding bills due, and you have not changed the due date of the bill in question before.

If you are using e-invoicing, remember to also change the due date in your online bank. Read more here.

Why is my electricity bill so high?

The amount of the bill depends on the amount of electricity consumption and also on the price of the electricity you buy.

For example, the following have an impact on electricity consumption:

  • Method of heating the property
  • Age of the property
  • Size of the property
  • Condition of electrical equipment in the dwelling
  • Number of inhabitants
  • Electricity usage habits
  • Thermal insulation of the property

In households heated with electricity, consumption is usually much higher in winter than in summer, and this is reflected in the bill.

You can see the price of the electricity you buy on your electricity bill and in the Vaasan Sähkö app. You can also put the price of energy out to tender and select the electricity contract and supplier of your choice.

Why have I received a bill from you even though I have changed electricity supplier?

If you live in Vaasan Sähköverkko’s distribution area, you will receive a bill from us even if you change your electricity supplier. Regardless of the electricity supplier, the local electricity distribution company will continue to be in charge of the transmission of electricity and the related billing. Electricity distribution cannot be competitively tendered.

Why do I have to pay the basic fee even when I am not using electricity?

The basic fee covers the fixed costs of the electricity supplier. This does not depend on the amount of electricity consumed; it’s the same for everyone.

For electricity transmission, the basic fee covers the cost of electricity grid maintenance and has little to do with the amount of electricity consumed. Electricity network maintenance and development ensure that customers have an uninterrupted power supply.

Faults and disturbances
How can I stay up to date on supply interruptions?

Any supply interruptions in Vaasan Sähköverkko’s distribution area are reported under the section Supply Interruptions on our website.

There’s a power outage. How can I find out what is wrong?

First, check if the power is out in the whole building. Try the lights in different rooms, for example. Then, check if the main fuses are in order. Do your neighbors seem to have the electricity on, or does the outage seem to affect more than one building?

If it does, it is most likely a fault in the distribution network. You can check the situation and instructions for reporting a fault on your electricity distribution company’s website.

How do I prepare for a power outage?

Power outages are always a hassle, but there are things you can do to be prepared. Modern electricity networks are also highly automated, helping to locate and repair faults quickly. For more information on your electricity network company’s emergency services, visit their website. If you live in the distribution area of Vaasan Sähköverkko, view the fault map here.

How to prepare for a power outage

  • Always have a power bank charged to provide extra power for your telephone during a power outage.
  • Keep a flashlight, candles, and matches in a convenient place.
  • Electric garage doors can be opened even without electricity. Learn how and also teach your family.
  • If you have a fireplace, remember to keep firewood available.
  • Also keep some cash available, because ATMs don’t work during power outages.

Things to remember during a power outage

  • Do not open the fridge or freezer unless you really have to.
  • Do you see a tree that has fallen or is about to fall on a power line? Do not go near or touch the tree, but inform your electricity network company.
  • Check the situation on your smartphone:
