Electricity meter
We maintain more than 70,000 electricity meters in our distribution area. As part of our metering service, we install new meters, replace outdated and broken meters, and remove meters from demolition sites.
Electricity meter malfunctions
It is rare for the actual meter to be broken. If your consumption information is incomplete or completely missing from the mobile app or the online service, it is usually due to a connection problem with the meter. The connection usually reconnects by itself within a few days.
If the remote connection fails, we have to estimate the customer’s consumption for the period when the meter was not connected. The assessment will continue until the connection to the meter is restored. We do this so that the customer avoids a large settlement bill later on.
If your consumption is estimated due to a connection problem, it will be reflected in your consumption data, for example in the mobile app. If we are able to retrieve an hourly report of your consumption from your meter when the connection is re-established, this information will also be updated in your consumption information.
Otherwise, or if consumption is estimated for only a short period of time, the estimated consumption may remain estimated, in which case billing will also be based on the estimated figures.
Do you suspect that your electricity meter is not functioning correctly?
Monitor your electricity consumption
You can monitor your consumption in the Vaasan Sähkö app or in the online service.

Electricity meter-related questions
How often is my electricity meter read?
In the Vaasan Sähköverkko area, consumption data from meters is read remotely four times a day.
What happens if my electricity meter does not meter correctly?
There are several reasons for a meter failure, but usually it is a connection problem. During a connection problem, the meter will accumulate the consumption data normally, but the readings are not transmitted to our systems remotely. The connection problem usually resolves automatically within a few days or a week.
What should I do if my electricity meter is broken?
If it turns out that the electricity meter is permanently broken and no metering data has been accumulated, the estimated reading based on previous consumption may remain valid as it is. In such situations, we will negotiate on the consumption with the customer.
Why has my consumption been estimated and billed accordingly?
In the event of a connection problem, the customer’s consumption is estimated on the basis of previous consumption at the place of use. The customer will be billed according to the estimated readings until the connection to the meter is restored. The connection is usually restored within a few days or a week. When the connection is restored, we will also receive meter readings for the period of the connection problem, after which we can retroactively adjust the billing that was based on the estimated reading.
Billing is based on estimated figures to avoid a large settlement bill for the customer.
Why is my estimated consumption not corrected?
If the connection to the electricity meter is momentarily lost and we are unable to retrieve the hourly report from the meter when the connection is restored, the estimated consumption will remain in force as it is. The estimated consumption is always based on your normal consumption.
Why has my consumption been estimated after replacing my electricity meter?
When we replace your electricity meter, your consumption will be estimated for a period ranging from a few hours to up to 12 hours. This is normal when replacing the meter and does not require any action from the customer. Again, the estimated consumption is based on the normal consumption at your place of use.
To what extent can billing based on estimated readings be adjusted retrospectively?
Under the terms and conditions of electricity supply, the electricity network company is allowed to retroactively adjust billing based on the estimated meter reading for a period of three years in favor of the company and up to six years in favor of the customer.
I contacted you regarding the issue of metering. When will my case be resolved?
The processing time is a few weeks. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
I suspect that my electrical equipment is interfering with the meter readings. What should I do?
If you suspect that your fridge, TV or any other electrical appliance in your home is about to break down and is interfering with your electricity metering, your first priority should be to contact a technician who can check the condition of the appliance. Vaasan Sähköverkko cannot help with electrical equipment checks.
If the inspection finds no fault in your home’s appliances and you suspect that the fault is in the actual meter, you can contact Vaasan Sähköverkko, and we will check that the meter is functioning correctly.
What is a HAN port?
E360 smart meters have a home automation interface, meaning a HAN port (P1/HAN/CII), through which the customer can view the meter readings if they have, for example, a home automation system connected to the HAN port.
For E360 meters, the HAN port corresponds to Sesko ry’s recommendation, which aims to harmonize the RJ12 home automation interfaces of meters used in Finland.
How do I activate the HAN port?
The new electricity meters have a home automation interface, the so-called HAN (Home Area Network) port. Through the port, you can transfer real-time meter readings from your electricity meter to, for example, your home automation system, allowing you to manage your consumption more efficiently.
When a new electricity meter is installed on your property, the port is not automatically activated. You can ask us to activate the HAN port by filling out the form on our website.
How can I benefit from the features of the HAN port?
For example, by connecting a home automation system or a smart charger for an electric car to the HAN port, you can view meter readings or transfer them to devices that can make use of that data. One way to make use of the information available through the HAN port is to optimize the consumption of the whole property.
How can the interface act as a power supply?
It is also possible to supply power to another device via the interface. A 5-volt (V) power supply produces 250 milliamperes (mA) of electric current. Overcurrent protection and recovery is provided. The meter controls the power supply. The power supply is interrupted, for example, in the event of a power cut. The power supply is enabled even if the HAN port is switched off.
How is the security of the HAN port ensured?
The connection is galvanically isolated from the electricity network, meaning that there is no electrical physical connection between the parts in the circuit.
